In a small saucepan, combine sugar, butter and syrup; boil about 5 minutes until thick. Pour into an ungreased 9×13″ pan. Arrange apples on top of syrup. Mix eggs, milk and vanilla. Dip French bread in egg mixture, arrange over top of apple slices. Cover and refrigerat overnight. Remove from refrigerator 1 hour before baking. Bake, uncovered, at 350F for 45 minutes until top is browned. Serves 15.
Sauce: Combine applesauce, jelly, cinnamon and cloves; cook over medium heat until jelly is melted. Spoon warm sauce on top and let set a bit before serving. Even better the next day reheated.
