3/4 C. brown sugar 1/2 C. butter 2 T. light corn syrup 4 tart apples, peeled and sliced thin 3 eggs 3/4 C. milk 1 tsp. vanilla 18 slices (1/4" thick) day-old French bread Sauce: 1 C. applesauce 10 oz. jar apple jelly 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/8 tsp. cloves
In a small saucepan, combine sugar, butter and syrup; boil about 5 minutes until thick. Pour into an ungreased 9x13" pan. Arrange apples on top of syrup. Mix eggs, milk and vanilla. Dip French bread in egg mixture, arrange over top of apple slices. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Remove from refrigerator 1 hour before baking. Bake, uncovered, at 350F for 45 minutes until top is browned. Serves 15.
Sauce: Combine applesauce, jelly, cinnamon and cloves; cook over medium heat until jelly is melted. Spoon warm sauce on top and let set a bit before serving. Even better the next day reheated.
