Things To Do - Amish

In Lancaster County Pennsylvania there is a thriving Old Order Amish and Mennonite community. Their heritage goes back hundreds of years, and although society around them has changed, they still live and work very much like their forefathers. Because they wear plain, solid-color clothing, they are also known as the "Plain People." Lancaster County has some of the most productive farmland in the country and our Amish neighbors tend their fields with mule or horse-drawn equipment. Their horse and buggies are a common sight on our roads. You will see hitching rails at shops, banks and many other businesses throughout Lancaster County. In addition to their horse and buggies for getting around, the Amish will use high-wheeled scooters and the Mennonites will use bicycles. The children will also use in-line roller blades. Children attend Amish and Old Order Mennnonite one-room schoolhouses through the eighth grade. They do not have electricity or phones in their homes, keeping the modern world from intruding into their lives. The Amish have a strong devotion to God and family and live within a caring, supportive community. A barn raising is a well known example of the Amish community coming together when tragedy strikes to offer support and help to the family. Obedience, humility, simplicity and hard work are the cornerstones of Amish life.

Come and experience the culture of the oldest Amish community in the world.

There are many places to visit to learn about the "Plain People". Be sure to ask your Authentic Innkeeper for their favorites.
